RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," he added. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
