In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
